Lesotho – Easter (15-18 April 2022)
LESOTHO – Easter (15-18 April 2022)
Trip Leaders – Ronnie and GaryB
DAY 1 – Friday 15
Leave Rotunda at 07h00 sharp – please be there 20 minutes before for driver’s briefing
Travel via Underberg and enter Lesotho at Sani Pass.
As things stand at present we will need to have a covid test at the SA side Border Post. This is an antigen test and costs R250. The other alternative is to arrive with a valid negative PCR test which must be less than 72 hours old.
Trip participants must all have a valid Covid Certificate for the purpose of re-entering South Africa. The covid test taken at Sani will have lapsed when we re-enter.
Once in Lesotho we will drive past Black Mountain and on to the Maloraneng Camp Site on the other side of Makothlong where we will camp for the night.
Camping Fees – Last we heard, R100 per person but we have been unable to communicate with the campsite owners to even make a booking. If we are unable to get in, we will have to wild camp nearby.
Travel Distance – 270 km. Approximate travel time 6h 45m.
DAY 2 – Saturday 16
Leave at 08h00
Travel via a newly constructed road (tar we believe) to Malibamatso Bridge where we will cross over Katse Dam and travel down the Western side of Katse Dam, via the Mohale Tunnel Outlet to Katse Village.
Fuel should be available at Katse Village.
Camping Fees – We have been advised that the Katse Lodge and Campsite have been closed, but there does appear to be another campsite nearby (fees unknown). If not, then we will wild camp on the banks of the Semana River below the Katse Dam wall.
Travel distance – 167 km. Approximate travel time 3h30m
Being a short day will allow us time for sightseeing and visiting any places of interest.
DAY 3 – Sunday 17
Leave at 08h00
Travel via Thabe–Tseka (fuel should be available) to Bob Philips Campsite on the Matebeng River where we will spend the night. Great place for a big camp fire.
Camping Fees – R50 per vehicle last time we were there. Long-drop toilet available.
Travel Distance = 140 km. Approximate travel time 3h45m
DAY 4 – Monday 18
Leave at 07h00
Travel over the rugged Matebeng pass, Sehlabathebe and exit Lesotho via Qacha’s Nek Border Post.
Matebeng Pass can be very technical, but for those who wish there is a fairly new very scenic bypass which will bring you out at a suspension bridge near Qacha’s Nek where we can meet up.
Travel via Matatiele, Kokstad, Ixopo and home.
Travel Distance – 446 km. Approximate travel time – 8 hrs.
GENERAL
Vehicle limit – 8
All participants must have a valid Covid Certificate for the purpose of re-entering South Africa
Vehicles must be 4x4, and have low range, preferably with high ground clearance
Each vehicle to have own recovery gear
Each vehicle to bring a bag of wood.
As can be seen from the trip itinerary, it has been extremely difficult to make any contact inside Lesotho to book campsites etc., and if we cannot be accommodated on arrival, participants must be prepared to wild camp, and be self-sufficient.
Rather than bring beers and cold drinks, please support the local shops
